Our Story
Established in 1982, Jersey DIPS (formerly Jersey DIPS Swimming Club) was originally set up to encourage and support anyone with a disability in Jersey to participate in swimming activities. The charity provides a warm water therapy pool for the benefit of those who—whether due to age, infirmity, or disablement—can benefit from such exercise.
Jersey DIPS seeks to speed up rehabilitation after injuries and operations and offer a form of self-care for painful long-term conditions. While the physiological benefits of warm water therapy are well known, strengthening bodies and helping to manage pain, it also improves mental health.
In 2019, Jersey DIPS had 57 active members, providing 86 days (129 hours) use of the pool. More than 80% of our referrals come from the hospital. Increasing from 50 members in 2018.
Members and their families alike report the positive effect of the therapy pool on their daily lives. Please click here to read our members testimonies.
Organised events
Jersey DIPS also organises social occasions outside the pool, two principal events being held each year. In January 2019, Jersey DIPS hosted a tea party for our patron, Lady Dalton, which was a huge success.
The Charity also hosts an annual Christmas lunch on the first Sunday of December every year. This is much enjoyed by members and their families.
We also participate in the Jersey Swimarathon. While Jersey DIPS Swimming Club traditionally opened this meeting, we now do laps in the smaller pool for an hour to allow those who have difficulty swimming to participate by walking up and down the length of the pool.
Membership
To use the facility, a person must become a member of the charity and submit an application form, countersigned by a medical professional.
Members can call us so we can assist if Jersey DIPS can support you. We will also offer interested members in viewing the therapy pool prior to joining and becoming a paid member.
Payment of an annual fee (£25) and admission charge (£3) for each session is also necessary.
Please click here to submit application.
Lifeguards
We use fully qualified lifeguards (ATSPRA qualified), they supervise the pool sessions to ensure safety. Our volunteers are trained in first aid and are on hand in case of injury or emergency.
